Brasserie HarkemaThe other night we had dinner with a small group at Brasserie Harkema. Brasserie Harkema is located on the Nes, a narrow street parallel to the Rokin where some theaters are located. When you enter Brasserie Harkema, first you enter into the separate bar area and you go up a small stair to the dining area. My first impression of the place was that it was a bit on the dark side. The light come mostly from spotlights. It makes for a cozy environment, but on the dark side for me.

When we were seated, we were greeted by a friendly waitress and handed the menu. The menu consists of different meat, fish and vegetarian dishes made from fresh ingredients. I ordered a caesar salad for a starter and the tuna for a main course. We also ordered some house wine and water. Harkema seems to purify their own water, so the water arrived in bottles with the Harkema logo. Also when the house wine arrived a little later, it also came in Harkema labeled bottles. Quite funny for a restaurant to have it’s own bottles ;-)

Our starters arrived in due order. My caesar salad tasted quite good. It consisted of big romana lettuce, a boiled egg in parts, two big pieces of toast to acts like croutons and caesar salad dressing. My tuna was also very good. It came alone on a plate, but fortunately it came with some salad and french fries on the side. It is true what Harkema claims that they have good food made from simple ingredients.

After all this we had to try the desserts of course. I decided to try the chocolate cake with hazelnuts. There was nothing wrong with that either. Also the coffee I had with it was of good quality.

So all in all there is nothing bad I can say about Harkema, the food is good, the service fast, efficient and friendly. Brasserie Harkema is how a restaurant is supposed to be :-)
