Located on a side street of the Albert Cuyp market, De Soepwinkel is a place I often passed, but never went to. Some years ago there was a big boom of soup shops in Amsterdam. Now a few years later most of them have closed. Only Soep En Zo and De Soepwinkel are left I think. The latest boom was wok places and they still seem to be doing okay.
And Subways is also opening more and more locations.
Anyway De Soepwinkel not only sells soups, but also (toasted) sandwiches, quiches and coffee and cakes. The decoration of the place is quite industrial, so not very cozy. After inspecting the quiches and cakes on the bar and ordering 2 coffees with the lady behind the bar, we took a table. It was not very busy, so we got our coffees very quickly. At that moment I was in doubt if I should order something to eat or not. I was not feeling very hungry, but the cakes and the spanish chickpea and chorizo or the sweet potato soup all looked very appetizing. So in the end I caved in and ordered the spanish soup with the lady behind the bar. A small size though
The soup arrived a little later with a piece of turkish bread and a piece of brown bread. I dipped my bread in the soup and tasted it and it tasted quite okay. It tasted a bit spicy and had different vegetables in it, not just chickpeas. I was disappointed to find only one small piece of chorizo in my soup though. After finishing the soup, I finally went to my coffee. Coffee and soup are not a good combination, so I waited with my coffee. Luckily my coffee was still warm and tasted okay. And it came with a small chocolate chip cookie
Although I am not a big soup fan, I still enjoyed the soup at De Soepwinkel. The prices are a bit steep though. 5 Euro for a small bowl of soup with one piece of chorizo is a bit much.
