interior of Italian restaurant Mambo, AmsterdamOn this day we were walking down the Albert Cuyp market, not really sure were to go. My friend was a little hungry, so he ordered some typically dutch herring sandwiches at a fish shop just off the Albert Cuyp. After finishing our sandwiches we walked down the street when we spotted Mambo. We had been at Mambo before, but we didn’t want to risk it that day. But we risked it today ;-)

The first thing I noticed when I entered inside Mambo is that it is very small, stuffed full with stuff, make the whole place feel rather cramped and cluttered. We took a table next to the display shelves that held different wines, waters and Italian cookies for sale. I took the menu, but since we had already eaten the herring sandwich, it was for informational purposes only. For lunch they were serving different Italian style sandwiches and salads. Later a woman sitting at another table ordered a salad and I saw that the serving size of the salads are rather small. After placing the order for 2 coffees with one of the waitresses, I looked at the place a little more. Another strange things is that Mambo has some more tables up some stairs on an entresol floor. To reach the stairs though you have to go behind the counter were the waitresses are working, go past the coffee machine and the open kitchen in the back. Also there are no signs for the emergency exits. These are already two violations of the dutch health and safety laws ;-)

By then our coffees arrived. The coffees were fine and came with a little almond cookie. While we where having our coffee, a delivery man arrived and the one of the kitchen staff had to roll the vegetables through the front door, behind the counter into the kitchen. Quite a challenge in this small place and the guy hit some things on the way, I tell you.

Anyway as it was getting lunch time, Mambo got more and more busy and the waitresses more and more stressed. So we decided to pay up and leave.

Mambo is not a place I would come back to. It feels very cramped and a bit unhygienic.
