Koffiehuis De Hoek, AmsterdamKoffiehuis De Hoek is located behind Dam square in one of the older parts of Amsterdam called De Jordaan. It’s a typical place of which you would find a lot in this area in the old days. Is has the typical wooden tables and chairs and lots of pictures and kitsch decoration. And the table cloths on the tables are actually tea towels! We tried to go to this place some other time before, but it was full. This time we were lucky and there was a table free. It was quite a horrible table next to the door, so when another table opened up we ran for it.

The menu of this place is quite basic. Different kinds of sandwiches, some salads, fresh orange juice and coffee and cakes. When the waitress came to our table, I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and a large fresh orange juice. My friend just ordered a coffee. The waitress was from asian decent and quite funny, saying thank you all the time.

We had to wait quite some time for our order, because it looked that only the asian girl and the guy behind the bar were working. And with the terrace and all the people inside it must have been stressful. The asian girl was running around like mad. Also the guy behind the bar didn’t waste a movement. When he was squeezing the orange juice, he didn’t even look at the bin when he threw the empty orange peel. He just threw it without looking! Throwing it inside the bin most of the time ;-)

Later another blond woman came from somewhere to help them out. Maybe she had been in the kitchen or something, cause she seemed to have come out of nowhere. But there must have been a kitchen somewhere to prepare all the food and more importantly my grilled cheese sandwich! Well lucky for me I didn’t have to wait much longer and I got my juice and orange.

Koffiehuis De Hoek, AmsterdamThe quality of the juice and sandwich were okay. The juice was quite sweet and the sandwich was well done with some ketchup on the side. After we finished all our things and we were talking for a while, the asian girl suddenly came with the bill. I guess we had worn out our welcome and we had to leave to make room for other clients. If the girl hadn’t been so funny and nice I would have said something about it. Anyway we paid up and went to take another coffee some place else.

Koffiehuis De Hoek is a funny place to grab some lunch or a coffee if you can get a table and don’t plan on staying too long ;-)
