Last year a new place opened on a once dead corner of the Leidseplein, Belgica. I wrote about Belgica before. But since then it closed and changed completely. Now it is more a standard type of brown cafe as we say in here in Holland.

Now Amsterdam is having a bit of summer these days, some days really hot and sunny separated by days that are less warm and cloudy. This day was a hot day though, so my friend and me decided to sit on terrace. Luckily the terrace at Belgica doesn’t get too much sun, so it was not that hot sitting there. We were on a table right next to the window giving me a view of the new inside through the window. The old Belgica was light with a modern interior, but the new Belgica has lots of wood and is quite dark.

Another new thing in the new Belgica is the table service. Just a little while after we had sat down, there was already a waitress asking us if we wanted to place our order already. We had some trouble with the menu, which consists of some flip over cards, but we only wanted a coffee and something fresh anyway. So I ordered a latte and a new fancy kind of apple juice. On the menu were also various sandwiches and hot meals in case you fancy something to eat here. We were full though from a big salad at the Hard Rock Cafe.

A little later another waitress came with our coffees. She also had some other drinks on her tray including my fancy apple juice, but she didn’t put it down. Thinking that she hadn’t brought it yet, I didn’t say anything. I did make a strange face I guess, because after 2 steps she came back and she asked if we also ordered the apple juice. Yes, of course. Well she told us we could say so next time The coffee was of good quality and the fancy apple juice was quite interesting. A little later my friend had to get to work, so we paid up and left.

For me the decoration of the new Belgica is worse than that of the old, but the table service is a nice addition. And it’s fast and pleasant.

update: Belgica is no more. The name of the bar has now been changed to Players…
