Review of cafe restaurant Cafe Noir, Amsterdam

Cafe Noir is located a bit out of the center at the Weesperplein. So it’s not a location that you just pass by. It is close to a part of the University of Amsterdam though and you can see that from the people who come here. Lots of students! It was a nice day but still a bit chilly so we took a table on the terrace that was in the sun. Most people on the terrace did the same and the terrace was moving with sun There were some students studying on the terrace and some people from the offices nearby.

We sat down and looked for a menu. There was a big blackboard inside, but it was quite unreadable from the outside. Then the waitress came, a very young looking girl, asking for our order. We asked for a menu and she pointed to another table that had a menu on it. I grabbed it and had a look. They had different kinds of basic sandwiches, some specialty sandwiches, toasted sandwiches and salads. I decided to have a juice and a broodje gezond, a typical dutch sandwich with ham, cheese, egg and lettuce. A little later the girl came back and we placed our order with her.

Our drinks arrived quite quickly. My friend had taken a coffee, but he didn’t get any sugar with it. So he had to ask the girl to bring some sugar. Also the juice was quite small for the price. After that it took a while for my sandwich to arrive. But when it did, I was pleasantly surprised by how generous it was. It was so big I had to split it in two and eat it with knife and fork. I could not open my jaws enough to make it fit like it was

When I had finished my sandwich I was quite full. By then the terrace was full of people for lunch and we couldn’t get the attention of the girl to ask for the bill. We went inside for paying when we thought that it was taking too long. Once inside I understood why the girl was so busy. She was the only one serving in the place! There was another guy behind the bar inside, but she had to do the tables inside and on the terrace. I was impressed that she managed it all! Anyway we paid up and left to enjoy the rest of the day.

Cafe Noir is a nice place to have lunch when you are in the neighborhood, but not so special to go especially there in its out of the way location.
