Review of restaurant Hannibal, Amsterdam

Now Hannibal is what I call a typically Dutch place. No nonsense decoration, Dutch men behind the counter running the place and a dutch sandwich menu. Sandwiches with typical dutch fillings like cheese, ox sausage or egg. And of course kroket! There are also eggs sunny side up or sate with fries if you are really hungry.

The service here is very efficient, but still friendly. Almost immediately after we sat down here, the table was cleared of the previous occupants leftovers and we were asked what we wanted to drink. When the guy brought the drinks, he asked for our food order. My friend didn’t know yet, but I did. I ordered eggs sunny side up on bread (we call that a uitsmijter in Dutch) with roast beef added to it.

Hannibal is a very busy place. There were a lot of people coming and going here and things behind the counter was a frenzy. While I was waiting for my eggs to arrive and group of women entered with a baby in a pram. The baby was quite noisy sometimes, especially when it dropped the thing it had on the floor. Anyway the women ordered with one of the younger waiters, but he got the order wrong. I think he didn’t fully understand their English. I am guessing the women were from Spain or Italy. The order was wrong, because when the women got sate with fries, they looked very surprised. They probably wanted a sandwich with meat and sate sauce, not the whole sate. Anyway the women didn’t mind too much, but the waiter got a lecture from one of his colleagues.
By then my eggs had arrived and they were the typical Dutch uitsmijter. The egg yolk was still a bit liquid, so you could soak it up with the bread. As a garnish I got a little salad. Everything was quite basic, but tasted very well.
After finishing we didn’t feel like staying here, because of the frenzy atmosphere. So we decided to pay up and go to the Bagels & Beans for a quiet coffee and a muffin.

Hannibal is a place with fast service and good, typical Dutch lunch food.
