Kick up your heels boys and girls and hear the Country & Western music. Kingfisher in de Pijp area of Amsterdam seems to want to breathe the atmosphere of the old fifties diners in the States. And although the bar with the red fridges give a cadillac type feel and the fact that it seems obligatory for women to wear cowboy boots here, it kind of misses the mark, because the rest of the decor doesn’t match. Even more funny was the group of Japanse gothics that were sitting at the back of the place when we came in.
Since all tables were taken, we took a seat in what seemed to be the waiting area of the place. Maybe it was not meant that way, but the bench with low tables made me feel like in the dentist’s waiting room. We took some menus and two minutes later there was already someone asking for our order. Since we hadn’t made up our minds yet, he said he would come back later. A few minutes later a table open up, so we moved our asses to the table.
Not much later another guy came to the table to take our order. We had finally made up our minds, so I ordered me a fresh orange juice and a spanish style sandwich with spanish cheese and ham and some other stuff on it. My friends both took a club sandwich with pastrami. The drinks arrived quite speedily, but the sandwiches arrived on the border of our waiting limit. I was a bit disappointed in the size of my sandwich. The pastrami sandwiches of my friends were much bigger even though the prices were about the same. The menu was also not very country & western, with just typical dutch sandwiches, although they were a bit more imaginative with the toppings. But no hamburger and fries here, better go to the Hardrock cafe for that.
Anyway after finishing our food, I took a large latte. They add extra milk here so it’s not that strong, just the way I like it. When the coffee was finished we asked for the bill, which arrived promptly and we left.
Kingfisher is a nice place, although the mix of music, decor and menu doesn’t make much sense. The staff is very speedy and friendly, although the kitchen no so.
