Chao Phraya thai restaurantThe Nieuwmarkt area of Amsterdam is kind of the central square of what now has been dubbed the China Town of Amsterdam. There is a buddhist temple there and all the street signs are also in Chinese characters. Anyway around the Nieuwmarket square itself there are a lot of bars with terraces on one side and some Thai restaurants on the other side. Chao Phraya has been around for quite some time and it’s grown larger in the years. I would like to say the food is still the same as a few years ago, but it is not. Not to say that it’s bad, because the food is still delicious, but they have cut back on the more expensive ingredients in the dishes.

Also the staff has changed quite a lot too, there are even some transsexuals walking around now! ;-) They were not so friendly, very to the point and not smiling much. After we got the menu, I saw they still had my favorite chicken salad, so I decided to take that. And for the main course I took a chicken with vegetables and cashew nuts dish.

The food arrived in a timely manner at the table and we dug in. The food tasted quite good and it was a lot. After the salad and the main course I was completely stuffed, so we didn’t try any desserts if they had any. I am glad to say the salad tasted as always. That dressing on it is really delicious. :-)

By the time we were finished the place had gotten more crowded and the table behind me was also taken now. They really utilized all the available space in the restaurant, because with a person sitting behind me, I couldn’t get out of table anymore (and I know I hadn’t eaten that much ;-) ). So to get out I had to push the table!

All in all, Chao Phraya is a good restaurant for a quick Thai bite, but don’t expect the traditional Thai hospitality.
