Review of lunch place Klavertje 4, Amsterdam

Canteen lunch at Lunchroom Klavertje 4

Having biked past Klavertje 4 many times in the Utrechtsestraat and I always wondering about this place, so today I finally took a look here. Klavertje 4 means four leafed clover in dutch and the plant theme has been carried into the decor. Lots of green and white. And a fake plant on the table which will stay green forever this way We took a look at the menu of Klavertje 4 on the table (also green!) and it proved not to be very inventive. Lots of bog standard sandwiches with meat, cheese, fishy salads etc. They do have some specials, which are a bit more expensive than the normal sandwiches. The people that come here look like office people from the offices around the neighborhood (the kind of wannabes I would have expected more in de Pijp region of Amsterdam). That, the decor and the menu reminded me all of a company canteen. Only the fry ups where missing.

Soon after we sat down a very friendly girl came and asked us if we had made a choice yet. Since we just picked up the menu, we asked her to come back a little later. After studying the menu, I decided to take a typical dutch sandwich called Broodje Gezond (healthy sandwich). It’s bread with ham, cheese, lettuce, egg and if you are lucky some pickles. I called backed the waitress and we gave her our order. Our drinks arrived very quickly after that.

The sandwich took a little longer. While we waited I had already noticed they liked to put a lot of lettuce on everything, so when my broodje gezond arrived, there was a lettuce explosion there too. Such a mountain made it very difficult to eat, cause my mouth is not that big I decided to divide the filling over the two halves and eat it well mannered with knife and fork.

For the price (€3,50) it was a very generous sandwich and I was lucky, because there were some pickles there. Not liking the canteen atmosphere too much, also the acoustics of the place made it sounds like a chicken coop, we asked for the bill, so we could leave and take a coffee some place else.

Klavertje 4 is a good place for a quick, standard, dutch sandwich lunch.
