This weekend was gay pride in Amsterdam, which means the yearly parade of gays & lesbians in boats were going through the Prinsengracht again. This year the parade was bigger than ever, taking quite a long time. But it is necessary, because intolerance here in Amsterdam seems to be on the rise. And intolerance is not the be tolerated! The funny thing was there was also a boat with heterosexuals participating to show their support to the gays and against the rising intolerance against them.
Anyway after two hours of watching the boat parade we got bored and hungry and we decided to go for dinner. Going fast and ahead of the crowd that was still watching the parade, we went to Kantjil & de Tijger just of the Spui to enjoy some Indonesian food. When we got there it was still quiet, although unfortunately all the tables on the terrace were already taken. It was a nice day, not too hot and sunshine, so it would have been nice to eat outside. We took a table inside close to the window.
The waitress quickly arrived with the menu’s. She noticed we were speaking English and asked us if dutch menu’s were okay. Of course they were, but it’s nice to know they have menu’s in other languages too, including Spanish! The girl took our drinks order and left us to study the menu. Now I always take the same thing in this place, namely the nasi rames. It’s ten little Indonesian dishes on one plate with rice. This way you get to sample many different Indonesian dishes at once.
When the waitress returned with our drinks, we gave our food order to her. Nasi rames of course and some kind of fried dumplings as starters. The starters arrived soon after we ordered them and we could dig in. They tasted good with their red sauce. After finishing the starter, they main course arrived soon after. The nasi rames has a consistent quality here, so I enjoyed that too as always.
Then it was time for dessert!
We asked for the dessert menu when they came to clear away our plates. We got a small menu with all kinds of typical Indonesian desserts. I wanted the spekkoek, a typical Indonesian cake, very rich and tasty. Unfortunately they didn’t have it
or many other things on the menu. In the end I took some kind of coconut drink. It had a peculiar flavor, but it tasted okay.By then the restaurant had gotten more busy, so it took some effort to get the bill. But after all us trying to get the attention of one of the waiters, we succeeded. So we paid up, luckily Indonesian food is not so expensive ;-), and left.
Kantjil & de Tijger (Kantjil and the tiger, Kantjil is a character from some Indonesian story I think) offers a great place to eat, the food arrives quickly and the service is friendly, but can get a bit swamped when the place fills up.

Hi. Saw your link on backlinksite. Reading through your post was awakening some memories. In 1974 (1000 years ago, I spent half a year in Amsterdam. And the Nasi Rames I ate there is a delightful Rememberance (right word?).
Anyhow. I remember the price, it was something like 3 gilders 50 or something like that. At the most 4 gilders. How much does Nasi Rames cost now?
Well.. wish you a nice day and more good Nasi Rames!
Willem.
Indeed a long time ago
Prices have changed a bit since then. I guess the euro didn’t help much either in that respect. But the normal nasi rames costs about €12,50 here now. Hello inflation!
