Just off Leidseplein is the art deco style Americain hotel. A few years ago it changed owners and now there is also a Bar Americain! Today was the first time in ages I actually went to this little square and it has changed tremendously. There used to be a sad little fountain on a run down square, but thanks to a kind old lady who declared in her will that her money should be used to refurbish this place we now have a spanking new large fountain with stone seats around it. It’s quite an improvement :-)

Bar Americain, with the hotel of course, is situated on this little square and from the bar you look straight on the fountain. The bar reminds me of a high society gentlemen’s club but the hotel has a few stars I think, so it’s inkeeping with it’s surroundings. After we went in and sat down, we were the first ones there, the waiter was immediately at our table. We both ordered a latte and a glass of water, cause it was still too early for drinks for us. The order arrived quickly, but no wonder if you are the only ones ;-) The coffee tasted good, not burned or bitter or anything.

After enjoying our coffee and the view, we asked for the bill. But then we got the shock! The waiter told us € 7,50! At first we thought we might have to pay for the water too, but then the waiter returned with the change and the receipt and it really was € 3,75 per coffee. So be warned, it’s a nice place with a beautiful view, but a bit on the expensive side.
