Here in Holland a few weeks ago a similar program to the Australian ‘My restaurant rules’-program started. Here it is called ‘Mijn tent is top’. There are four restaurants in different parts of Holland participating and one of them is in Amsterdam. So we decided to pay Brasserie Suisse a visit!
When you go in there is a sign saying you might be filmed and appear on their live webcam. So we wore our sunglasses not to be recognized
It was rather quiet when we arrived, only 2 other tables were occupied, but we were on the late side of lunch, so maybe it had been busier earlier. The interior is rather dark, so we took a table close to the window. The window seat was taken unfortunately. The menu is nothing special and rather expensive I have to say! Drinks are normal prices for Amsterdam, but 7 euro’s for an omelette is a bit steep. We decided on the club sandwich and the pumpkin soup. They both tasted very good so we didn’t feel completely robbed. Also we took a cafe latte, which was also one of the better I have tasted in Amsterdam. Almost Starbucks quality!
The service was up to standard too. The girls took their jobs quite seriously and were very prompt and correct. But we felt a certain tension in the air and both girls wearing faces like they were having PMS didn’t contribute to a more relaxed atmosphere. I think there is a lot of pressure from the owners of the place on the staff to do everything perfectly, because they stand to loose 300.000 euro’s if they don’t win the show. But I think people would feel a little more comfortable here if they let the rains loose just a little to create a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. They only time the staff or at least the floor manager relaxed was when the hunky coffee delivery guy came. I think she likey
But if they could have the same openess and chattiness with the customers, I think it would contribute a lot to their success and maybe winning the show.
And another thing might be asking 20 cents for using the toilets, because at least 4 people came in for only using the toilet. Or maybe those people just wanted to be on tv???
update: Suisse has been closed and now a Mexican restaurant is at that location.
