Today I was in a part of Amsterdam where I normally don’t walk around much, but have biked through many times, de Haarlemmerdijk. Here we ran into a place called Het Vlaamsch Broodhuys (The Flemmisch Breadhouse). It looked interesting and more appealing than the suit&tie place we checked out and ran away from earlier. Coming inside we found a big counter with 4 girls chatting away and some small tables at the back. After checking out the menu of sandwiches, well what else would you expect of a Breadhouse, I decided to take the bog-standard mozerella, tomato and pesto one.
To be honest I was rather disappointed when it arrived on the counter. First there was no table service so you had to pick it up from the counter yourself and secondly it was rather small! Seeing all the big breads displayed there I expected something more than just to 2 slices of bread. The taste was fine though, although it didn’t taste as special as they made it out to be. There was a story on the walls explaining the Flemmisch way of making bread, that they don’t use artifical flavouring and leave the bread to rise for 3 days and yes they use vitalized water. What the f* is vitalized water anyway?!? I didn’t taste it in the bread haha Also sitting there eating my sandwich I felt a bit like in the waiting room of a dentist’s office. The decor is the standard one all new places seem to be using these days and lacked any atmosphere, expect the dentist one. Overall it was rather disappointing and I probably won’t come back here.
